Seoul has conducted a new monitoring instrument to directly measure greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and methane) in the city using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, marking the first such effort by a local government in Korea.

In this experiment, Novascop’s NGL was deployed, collecting highly detailed data across the city at 2–15 meter intervals, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of greenhouse gas monitoring.

The collected data will serve as a scientific basis for the formulation and implementation of Seoul’s carbon-neutral policies. Through this pilot deployment, the effectiveness of remote sensing technology was verified, and the potential for improving urban air monitoring systems and informing policy was confirmed.

Details of this research and pilot observations can also be found in the Seoul Institute’s publication:
“Advancing Urban Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Using Remote Sensing Technology” (Published: November 10, 2025).
